The City of Opp reached out recently to help several small communities ravaged by last week’s tornados.

Mayor H.D. Edgar said Thursday the city was able to send a 200-kilowatt generator to Margaret, which is in St. Clair County.

“The town is east of Birmingham close to Argo,” he said. “By sending this, we are enabling six communities to have water.”

Edgar said he was really proud the city could help these small communities.

Edgar said he made his way through Argo shortly after it was hit by a tornado last Wednesday, but left Birmingham just in time to miss the large tornado that hit there.

“Everything was devastated,” he said.

“The homes, you couldn’t tell if they were houses or mobile homes. We stopped for gas 3 miles south of where the tornado hit.”

Edgar said the city’s “hearts and prayers” go out to the victims.
