Locals are invited to a law enforcement appreciation service on Sunday at Covenant Baptist Church.

“We are going to have law enforcement appreciation on Sunday,” said Pastor Tommy Green. “We have taken our little cards to the police departments at Andalusia and Opp and to the sheriff’s department.”

District Attorney Walt Merrell and his staff will be in attendance, Green said.

Green said a Gideon representative to give out Bibles to officers, and that the church will provide gifts.

Green said they are going to give away blue light bulbs to all the families in attendance.

“We are asking them to burn them at night for a month to show their support for our local law enforcement,” he said. “Also, we are encouraging them when they see an officer beside the road to not only get over, but to say a prayer for the officer. Also as the week goes by if you hear a siren, pray for them then, as well.”

Green said it’s rare for a week to go by that a police officer doesn’t lose his or her life.

“We want to let them know we appreciate what they do,” he said.

The service begins at 10:30 a.m., on e mile east of South Alabama Regional Airport.
