The city of Opp on Thursday broke ground on the new veterans pool.

Work on the city of Opp’s new pool is under way.

The city held a formal groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning.

Talks of a new veterans pool have been in the works for years, but earlier this fall, the Opp City Council OK’d spending some $400,000 for a heated chlorine pool.

The pool will feature an six-lanes and will allow the city to host competitive swim meets.

“This has been a long time coming,” Opp Mayor John Bartholomew said.

The project will also include a clubhouse with bathrooms, showers and a sitting area and concession stand.

The pool is coming from Blue Haven Pools and Catrett Construction Is building the structures on the site.

“We are excited,” Bartholomew said. “This is going to be great for our city. It will be a wonderful draw for our city.”

The space will also feature a salute to veterans and the military.
