Vigil in honor of Macer is tonight at 8

Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the cause of an accident that lead to the death of an Andalusia High School freshman.

Kevin Cook, spokesperson for the Alabama State Troopers, said Monday that the crash report would be completed in seven to 10 days and that the traffic homicide investigation will take 30-45 days to complete.

Lorne Wayne Macer, 15, was operating a 1994 Harley Davidson motorcycle that was struck by a 2008 Ford Expedition on U.S. 29 at the 49.5-mile marker, three miles north of Andalusia near Lambert’s Mobile Home Park in Heath.

The accident occurred at 7:10 p.m., Friday.

Macer was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital where he died Saturday. The driver of the Expedition, whose name has not been released yet, was not injured.

SGA President Taran Carrasco is working with school officials to organize a candlelight vigil in memory of Macer.

The vigil will be held on the front lawn at AHS tonight at 8.

“This is open to all students and members of the community,” Carrasco said.

Andalusia City Schools issued the following statement, “It is with heavy hearts that we share information regarding the recent loss of 2016 Andalusia High School freshman Lorne Wayne Macer. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been impacted by the loss of this young man.”

Andalusia City Schools Superintendent Ted Watson said that the system had made all of its guidance counselors available to students at AHS.

“Dr. Shakespeare did a very good job prepping the kids about the loss Lorne,” he said. “I talked to him a little while ago and he said it had been a good day.”

Watson said he spent the morning at the high school.

“With Facebook, it’s not like when you or I went to high school and the kids were going to school and finding out,” he said. “I think that has helped with the shock. The kids seemed to be handling it as well as they possibly can.”

Tee Terry of Caitie’s Army is heading up a bike ride in honor of Macer.

“I need a group of bikers to show last respects for a 15-year-old boy that lost his life on his bike,” she said. “We want everyone to meet at Huddle House in Andalusia at 7 Tuesday night. This child loved his Harley, so if you can find it in your heart to ride in and make him smile.”

A GoFund Me account has been set up for the family with a goal of $3,000. Yesterday, $1,290 had been raised.
