Calling all third graders in Covington County.

The Covington County Soil and Conservation District is readying for its annual third grade poster contest.

This year’s theme is “Healthy Soils are Full of Life,” Education Specialist Suzi Mersmann said.

“In cooperation with the National Association of Conservation Districts and their auxiliary, the Covington County district provides each third grader in the county with a classroom presentation, study materials and poster board for creation of their own stewardship-themed poster,” Mersmann said.

This year’s theme focuses on the role of healthy soil in lives and highlights steps that can be taken to improve soil health and conserve the natural resource.

Mersmann said she will visit local third grade classrooms and explain the details of the poster contest and present the conservation theme.

“Student poster creations will be judged, recognized and promoted through several levels of competition,” she said. “The winning poster is used for local and state level promotional materials.”

Prize money is awarded to first through third place winners, and winners will also be honored at the annual youth dinner in April.

The poster contest is open to all public, private and homeschooled third grade students in the county.
