Archives to hold genealogy workshops

Alabama Archives’ expert genealogist Nancy Dupree will lead two half-day genealogy workshops at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) this summer. Genealogy 101: A Workshop for Beginners will be held on Sat., July 8, 2017, from 9 a.m. to noon. This workshop is specifically tailored to those just beginning their family history research. On Sat., Aug. 12, 2017, the ADAH will offer African American Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond from 9 a.m. to noon. Dupree will also lead this workshop focused on effective strategies for researching African American ancestors.

Genealogy 101: A Workshop for Beginners on July 8 will offer step-by-step instruction followed by hands-on research in the ADAH’s EBSCO Research Room, with full access to a vast number of resources and state-of-the-art research tools. Participants will be given a solid foundation to craft an effective research plan and learn valuable skills to help navigate the oftentimes overwhelming world of genealogical research.

African American Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond on August 13 will equip participants to effectively navigate potential research roadblocks and address challenges specific to African American genealogical research. Following the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to conduct hand-on research in the Archives’ EBSCO Research Room. This workshop is suited for all levels of research experience.

The workshops will be held in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium. The registration fee for each workshop for the general public is $30. Friends of the Alabama Archives members can register at a discounted rate of $20. Spaces are limited and advance registration is required.
