Staci Wilson receives a check on behalf of South Central Alabama Mental Health from board member George Proctor.
Area non-profits got a collective $27,000 boost in revenue from the Andalusia Health Services Inc. board Tuesday in a contribution ceremony at White and McClung.
Seven agencies received money from the organization. The foundation fund was started decades ago, when the original citizen owners of the Andalusia hospital sold it to a private company.
The sellers then invested the more than $2 million profit into the Andalusia Health Services foundation, which funds a variety of projects, including scholarships for students entering professions in the medical field.
Receiving funds were the South Central Mental Health Board; Camp ASCCA; the United Methodist Children’s Home; the American Red Cross; the Andalusia Lions Club; the Covington County Health Department; and Meredith’s Miracles.
Each year, the group distributes funds not only to area agencies, but also provides scholarships to students entering the medical field. In return for scholarship money, students sign contracts indicating they will work in Covington County for one year for every year they receive scholarship assistance.
