The Lower Alabama Arts Coalition and the Covington County Quilt Guild are partnering together this month to show that quilting is still alive and well.

“It was my mother, Jane Barber’s, idea to bring this to the LAAC,” Member of the guild Jennifer Dinwiddie said. “We thought it would be a good idea to have a quilt show of some sort. So, we brought it to Jeanni at the LAAC and she was on board with it.”

The guild is going to showcase some new quilts, as well as bring in older ones they have made.

“We have one that fits in well with the Alabama Bi-centennial,” Dinwiddie said. “We have a selection of barn quilts, and several designs that are new.”

The main thing that Dinwiddie wants people to take away from the show is knowing that quilting is alive and well.

“Quilting isn’t something that just your grandmother does anymore,” Dinwiddie said. “It is an art form. Women from all over the Andalusia and Opp area come together and do some beautiful handwork. Quilting is still alive and well in Covington County.”

Along with the custom quilts, the Covington County Quilt Guild also makes comfort quilts that will be on display, which are given from the guild to law enforcement officers all over the county. They will also have Quilts of Valor displayed honoring veterans.

There will be three receptions for the show on Fri., Sept. 6 at 5 p.m., Sat., Sept. 7 from 9 a.m., until noon and Sun., Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
