Family, friends and fans swarmed to the opening night of the 42nd Andalusia Invitational Thursday night.

Four teams from the county are in the tournament and two have progressed to the winners’ bracket.

Pleasant Home 57, Opp 38

In the second game of the night, Pleasant Home defeated Opp, 57-38.

The Eagles got off to a good start, gaining a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Opp could not come back at halftime and trailed by five points, 27-22.

Pleasant Home (6-1) sealed the win, outscoring the Bobcats in the third quarter, 14-10.

Leading scorers for the Eagles were Kody Taylor with 16 points and Ethan King with eight points.

For the Bobcats, Gavin Free led his team with nine points.

Andalusia 64, Florala 32

In the night’s third game, Andalusia took on Florala, winning 64-32.

The Bulldogs (8-0) led by 20 points after the first quarter and Andalusia coach Richard Robertson let the bench get some playing time.

“What I was doing is trying to get (the bench) ready to play and see how they’re playing,” Robertson said after the game. “In the second half all we were trying to do is get the ball inside. They’re ninth and 10th graders and I wanted to see if they could hold their own.

“That’s our depth. That’s what I was doing is working on our depth. We’re not interested in overkill. We’re trying to develop and work on fundamentals, pass drills and defense.”

Robertson added that the Wildcats made a statement against the starters at the beginning of the game.

“Florala did a good job of breaking us down, even with our starters in the game,” he said. “My players know about it, I already jumped on them at halftime about it. We’re trying to keep the ball from getting inside the basket.

“They broke us down a time or two,” he said. “The more passes that are made, the weaker defense will become.”

Results from the final two days of the Andalusia Invitational will be published in the Tues., Dec. 16, edition of the Andalusia Star-News.
