Sarah Sonnier only had a few words to describe how she felt upon hearing the news that she broke the Babe Ruth 12U Softball World Series record for the most strikeouts by a pitcher.

“Good. Great,” Sonnier said upon hearing the news.

Sonnier, a Franklin, La., All-Star, struck out 15 batters in Thursday night’s 9-6 loss to Othello, and found out she broke the record from her dad, David, after the game.

Sonnier said her key to success was to never give up until the game was over.

“I just try to pitch the ball and try not to get down,” Sonnier said. “The game’s not over until it’s over.”

Friday morning, Babe Ruth officials made it official by congratulating Sonnier on her accomplishment after her team’s game against host, South Alabama.

Sonnier’s name will be printed alongside those of Sydney Cicchetti of W. Kootenay, B.C., and Lauren Riley of Santa Fe, Fla., who each had 13 strike outs in 2004 and 2010, respectively.

Sonnier has been playing softball since she was 8 years old, and her proud parents are Lori and David Sonnier.
