Straughn’s Nick Allen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning Friday afternoon to help lift his team to win over New Brockton in the Straughn baseball tournament at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.

The Tigers ended up winning the game 17-2 in five innings due to the mercy rule.

“It was a good start to the tournament,” Straughn coach John Fussell said. “I thought Zack Stinson threw real well and located his pitches really well. Jacob Ganous came in and did a good job and Austin Creel was a little shaky at first, but he worked through it.”

Straughn’s scoring got started in the first inning on an RBI single from Luke Fussell to score Josh Dewrell.

In the second inning, Levi Lumpkin, Dewrell and Fussell all scored on a 3 RBI double from Allen.

Before Allen hit his home run, Straughn scored two runs on a single from Chase Short and a sacrifice fly from Fussell to later score Short.

The Tigers later kept the scoring drive alive in the fourth inning when Dewrell, Fussell, Zack Stinson, Zack Lunsford, Short and Lumpkin all earned runs in that inning.

Stinson came around on an RBI single from Short; Lunsford and Short came around on a two-run single from Fussell; and Lumpkin came in an RBI double from Allen.

Stinson earned the win for Straughn on the mound. He pitched 3.0 innings, allowing no hits and striking out five.

Jacob Ganous earned the save pitching 1.0 innings and allowing one hit.

Dewrell was 0-for-4 with four runs; Fussell was 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBIs and three runs; Allen was 4-for-4 with one single, two doubles, one home run, one run and five RBIs; Zack Turvin was 1-for-4 with one single; Chase Parker was 0-for-4 with one RBI and one run; Stinson was 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs; Lunsford was 2-for-3 with two singles and one run; Short was 2-for-3 with two singles, three RBIs and two runs; and Lumpkin was 3-for-3 with three singles and three runs.

Despite the win Friday afternoon, Fussell said his team is not playing at a level where he wants them to be playing.

“Our bats came alive enough to allow us to get some guys in there to pitch that needed to pitch,” he said. “We still aren’t playing with the same intensity than we were earlier in the year. We’ve got to do that.”

Straughn will play Red Level today at 9 a.m. at LBWCC.
