Straughn outscored Red Level 24-6 in the second half to claim a 52-16 victory in its opening game of its annual Thanksgiving tournament tonight.

SHS led 28-10 at the break, thanks to a late put back by leading scorer Brittany Driver. Driver was also fouled on the play and extended the lead.

The first period wasn’t one the home team will want to remember.

Red Level cut the game to two points on a 3-pointer late in the opening period to trail 8-6.

SHS coach Scott Kinsaul said his team didn’t get off to the best of starts offensively.

“I thought we got off to a poor start on offense tonight,” Kinsaul said. “I thought defensively all night we were decent.”

Straughn strutted to a 34-12 lead in the third period and led 41-13 on a sweet pass from Driver to Jacie Williamson with 3:33 left.

SHS led 45-13 going into the fourth period.

Driver led with 16 points; Williamson added 10 points; Katelyn Kinsaul had eight points; Mariah Bonham got seven points and Taylor Wood had five points, both from off the bench.

“I thought we played hard the whole game, and that’s what I ask of them,” Kinsaul said.

RLS girls basketball coach David Godwin said he was proud of the girls’ effort.

“They played hard,” Godwin said.

In other action, Pleasant Home beat Straughn’s 9th grade team 50-22.

Jade Self had 10 points for PHS.
