RLS girls get 1st win, boys defeat rival

Red Level’s varsity girls basketball team claimed their first win of the season Monday night, defeating McKenzie on the road 43-18.

The Lady Tigers (1-5) held McKenzie to five points during the first half of play, where they had a 28-5 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Red Level added eight points in the third quarter and seven points in the fourth to cap the win.

“We finally started to play a little bit better,” Red Level coach Delores Douglas said about the win. “We started to give a little effort and hustle and that goes a long way.

“They played, they worked hard and worked the ball,” she said. “We executed on offense. I’m proud of them.”

McKenzie only scored 13 points in the second half.

Koneshia Calloway led in scoring with 16 points and Tiara Coleman added 15 in her team’s win.

For McKenzie, Aleshia Stuckey had 10 points.

The Lady Tigers’ will host W.S. Neal next Monday night in their first home game of the season.

Three of Red Level’s players ended the night in double figures in the win Monday night.

“We were fortunate to win last night and had a big game,” Red Level coach Fred Kelley said. “I was real pleased with the way the boys stepped up.

“It was a big rivalry game on the road for us,” he said. “We hope we can get through this (Straughn Shootout) and get back home from the tournament.”

The Tigers’ first game of the Straughn Shootout on Thursday will be against McKenzie.

“It will be a big challenge again,” Kelley said.

McKenzie took an early 19-16 lead after the first quarter, but by halftime, Red Level took the lead at 37-30.

Red Level extended its lead in the third quarter, adding 25 points compared to McKenzie’s 14.

Troy Nolen led Red Level with 20 points, O.J. McGhee had 18 and Nick Dorsey had 14 in their team’s win. In addition, McGhee and Dorsey both had 10 rebounds apiece.

Red Level improves to a 2-5 record on the season.
