The Florala Wildcats won its first games of the 2010 season Thursday night against Butler County Magnet School in a doubleheader.
Florala won the first game 12-2, and 13-3 in the second.
“Hopefully, this is something we can build off of,” Florala coach Stan Gooden said. “Our first area game is against Geneva County (today). They’re going to be a difficult opponent.
“We feel like we have some momentum going into this weekend.”
Gooden said his team’s pitching performance looked “better” than it had been.
Erik Vega earned the win in the first game striking out 11 batters, and Brock Goodwin earned the win in the second game with eight strikeouts.
“Brock had really struggled these last two to three times before, and he’s been working on some things,” Gooden said. “He made some progress (Thursday night). That was a real positive to see.
“Erik came in and did a real nice job in the first game throwing strikes,” he said. “I believe he only gave up two hits in that game.”
In addition, Vega and Goodwin had a good night hitting in the first game. Vega had a home run and Goodwin hit a grand slam.
In the second game, Zac Fleming was 3-for-4 and Goodwin was 3-for-3.
With the weather permitting, the Wildcats (2-9) will host Geneva County in a doubleheader today starting at noon.
“We’ve got a little confidence, and that’s what we needed,” Gooden said. “If we can build off of that and take that into this weekend, then we’ll have a god chance of winning.”
