Lady Saints sweep No. 1 LSU-Eunice

The Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Lady Saints softball team swept the No. 1 LSU-Eunice Lady Bengals in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Lady Saints won 8-6 in the first game when winning pitcher Kayla Beth Logsdon hit a three-run home run with two outs to seal the victory for her team.

In the second game, Lady Saints’ pitcher Colby Holmes pitched a seven-inning shutout to help lead her team to the 1-0 win.

“I’m actually very, very, very pleased with the way we competed (Friday),” Lady Saints coach Tommy McDaniel said. “I thought our intensity was outstanding and it kept us in the game.”

The Lady Saints will travel to play Meridian Community College today in Mississippi at 1 p.m.

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, LBWCC’s Joy Gandy and Barclay Davis reached on base with a hit-by-pitch and a single, respectively to set up the three-run home run from Logsdon.

Former Andalusia Lady Bulldog Jessica Centner led in hitting for the Lady Saints. She was 3-for-4 with three singles.

Logsdon was 2-for-4 with one home run; and Ashley Gates was 2-for-3.

Holmes earned the win for the Lady Saints pitching seven innings and allowing no hits.

The only run for the Lady Saints (19-14) came on an RBI from Heather Brinkmeier, who was 2-for-3 for the game.

“That was a good win for us because it gives us momentum coming off a five-game losing streak,” McDaniel said. “We lost five in a row, and that gave us a boost.”

After the Lady Saints’ game today, they will travel to play Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham on Tues., April 13.

On Sun., April 18, the Lady Saints host Enterprise-Ozark Community College at 1 p.m.
