This week, we’ll be moving The Star-News’ Web site, www.andalusiastarnews.com, to a new platform.

While our Web address will remain the same, the page will have a little bit of a different look and cleaner navigation. In our office, we’re thrilled, mainly because we’ve been assured that the process we use for posting will be easier.

If all goes well, our new site will go live Tuesday. We’ll post updates in Tuesday’s paper, on our current Web site and on our Facebook page to alert readers when the change actually occurs.

And while the change will make little difference for most readers, those who enjoy commenting on the Web will have to register again. And this time, the process will be a little different.

We’ve decided to continue allowing our readers to comment using chosen pen names. However, before we allow them to begin posting under the nicknames, someone from The Star-News will verify their identities.

This is a middle ground for those who enjoy posting anonymously and those who like to call and yell at us for allowing anonymous posts. While users will remain anonymous to our Web readers if they choose, we hope that knowing someone can easily identify them will encourage a little more civility.

In our very long terms of use statement, there is a paragraph that reads users: “agree not to upload, post, distribute, e-mail or otherwise publish or make available on this Web site any libelous, defamatory, obscene, harmful, vulgar, threatening, tortuous, harassing, abusive, invasive of another user’s privacy, hateful, racially or ethnically objectionable or otherwise illegal material.”

We’ll also continue our current policy, which is to rely upon readers to police the site, flagging comments which they deem objectionable or inappropriate.

A little more than two years ago, when we moved to our current site, we lost some of our online archives in the process. In this move, the archives are and will continue to be on our company’s servers. We anticipate that all of the material will still be accessible.

Our Google Analytics reports for March showed 570,000 page views on our Web site for the month, a number that is trending upward. During that month, we had 4,999 unique visitors.

We are pleased to be a go-to place for information about Andalusia and Covington County, and look forward to hearing your feedback about the changes.
