Man charged with capital murder in death of nephew, 4

A 4-year-old boy is dead and his uncle has been charged with capital murder after allegedly fatally shooting the child Friday afternoon in Opp.

Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Michael McDonald said units were dispatched to the 1000 block of West Cummings Avenue around 2 p.m.

McDonald the victim had been shot in the chest with a 14.5 mm rifle and was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 3 p.m.

“The investigation revealed that the victim’s uncle, John Curtis Davis, age 25, became angry with the victim, produced a rifle and fired one round from the rifle, striking the victim in the chest,” he said.

Officials did not release the victim’s name.

OPD, Covington County District Attorney Greg Gambril and agents from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation were still investigating the incident when The Star-News went to press Friday night.
