Straughn outscored Pleasant Home 20-6 in the second period on its way to a 47-29 win over the Eagles on Thursday night at the SHS Christmas Shoot Out.

The Tigers will advance to play Kinston today at 8 p.m. in the final game of the day. Kinston beat Daleville earlier on Thursday.

SHS coach Rusty Andrews said the key in the second period was his team’s inside game.

“We started pounding the ball down inside to our post players,” Andrews said.

For Straughn, the inside was made up of Austin Pickrel and Colby Hughes, who led the Tigers with 19 and 14 points, respectively.

At the end of the first period, Pleasant Home held a 13-8 lead, but Straughn’s epic second period held the Eagles to 28-19 at the break.

In the third period, both teams stepped up their defensive schemes. Straughn outscored Pleasant Home 5-2.

“We played good defense,” Andrews said about the third quarter. “We turned the all over too much. We didn’t get that many shots off. We wanted to slow down the tempo of the game, and didn’t look to shoot.”

Straughn then outscored Pleasant Home 16-8 in the fourth period to get the win.

Cory Sims led the Eagles with nine points, and Colter Poole chipped in eight points.

Pleasant Home will play Daleville at 5 p.m. tonight.
