SHS beats Providence Christian 10-7; Red Level 7-4

Straughn tied the game up 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning, added five runs in the fourth and held on late to beat Providence Christian School 10-7 Friday night in the first game of its annual invitational tournament.

Then in the night cap, SHS beat Red Level 7-4 to claim a two-game sweep.

The Tigers’ five runs in the fourth came on two hits and two errors in a game where the Eagles threatened late, coming from a 10-3 deficit to score two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the first game of the day, Red Level fell to PCS 11-1 in six innings.

Statistics from the last game were not available when The Star-News went to press last night.

Tournament action resumes today at 2 p.m.

Straughn 10, Providence Christian 7

The Tigers’ three-run third inning began when lead-off hitter Zack Turvin was hit by a pitch. Turvin later came in on a double from Doug Mosely, who scored on a passed ball later to make it 2-0.

Then, Chase Short and Keith Edgar then walked and one batter later, Lane Simeon hit a sacrifice RBI to score Short.

Providence Christian got off to a 2-0 start in the first inning.

James Snellgrove scored on an RBI single from Alex Plagenhopf, and Nathan Turner later came in on a single from Riley Grantham, who led the Eagles with two hits and two RBIs.

PCS led 3-0 in the third thanks to Grantham’s first RBI.

Straughn’s Brett Hudson came in to pitch after Short gave 3.0 innings on the mound.

Hudson popped up the first and third batters, and struck out the second in the fourth to help propel the Tigers to their five-run fourth inning.

Straughn’s Gunter Wise and Brennan Head scored on a passed ball and a balk, respectively to start the fourth inning. Edgar hit a two-run single to score Turvin and Mosley to give the Tigers a 7-3 advantage.

Johnny Owens doubled Edgar and SHS led 8-3 after the fourth.

Hudson earned the win on the mound for the Tigers, allowing two hits, one earned run and struck out five.

The Tigers made it 10-3 in the fifth inning on a solo homer by Head and a sacrifice RBI from Short to score Turvin.

PCS scored its two runs in the sixth on an error at short stop and first base.

Edgar got the save for the Tigers, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one.

Turvin and Owens went 2-for-4 each; Edgar went 1-for-3 with two RBIs; and Mosley, Short, Owens and Head had one RBI each for SHS.

Providence Christian 11, Red Level 1

Providence Christian’s David Darty struck out five and allowed one walk, two hits and one earned run in 6.0 innings to help lead the Eagles to a 10-run victory over RLS.

Darty’s first hits allowed came in the fourth inning on Red Level’s 11th and 12th batters, respectively.

The Eagles scored two runs on errors in the first inning, which plagued RLS throughout.

Snellgrove and Phillip Blackmon scored in the first inning and later in the sixth added another run each to end the ball game on a two-run single by Grantham, who came in to pinch hit for Brad Lolley.

PCS led 5-0 after the second inning thanks to a Tristan Thompson score on a passed ball and a two-run single by Snellgrove.

Red Level got on board in the third on a rare error at third committed by the Eagles.

In the bottom of the third inning, PCS took a 6-1 lead on a sacrifice by Thompson to score Andrew Osborne.

PCS added three runs in the fifth inning on one hit and two errors.

Snellgrove led the Eagles and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs; and Grantham went 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

Troy Nolen and Cody Marley had one hit each for RLS.
