Beloved former coach dies

Shelby Searcy, a former Andalusia High School teacher, coach and administrator died Wednesday.

Shelby, who went on to serve as superintendent of Butler County Schools and later of Union City Schools in Mississippi, was this year named one of Andalusia High School’s Outstanding Graduates. Previously, he was inducted in the AHS Football Hall of Fame.

Searcy was a 1947 graduate of AHS who returned to his alma mater following college and military service. He was an assistant coach of Andalusia’s 1958 state championship football team, and served as head coach from 1960-1964.

He and his wife, Rachel, made their retirement home in Greenville.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Sat., Nov. 2, at First Baptist Church in Greenville with services following at 11. Graveside services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Andalusia.
