SHS girls sweep Elba Monday night

Straughn swept Elba 25-10, 25-12, 25-12 in volleyball action on Monday night.

The Lady Tigers were led by seniors Jacie Williamson and Katelyn Kinsaul. Williamson had six kills and three aces, while Kinsaul compiled 11 assists and six aces.

Paige Taylor, also a senior, had four aces for SHS. Hannah Lawless had four kills, and Lexie Cottle had five kills.

In other Monday night action, Zion Chapel topped Opp, 3-2; and Andalusia fell at T.R. Miller, 3-1.

Earlier this weekend, the Lady Tigers held their volleyball tournament, in which Ariton took home the title.

The Lady Purple Cats and Lady Tigers finished tied 3-1 after the day’s round robin. According to the head-to-head rule, since AHS won 2-1 over SHS in earlier tournament action, the Lady Purple Cats nabbed the title.

After falling in the first set, SHS took a 6-0 lead in the second and held back a threatening TRM squad. In the third set, the Lady Tigers led 4-1 and gave up six match-point opportunities before getting the tiebreaker.

Straughn scored 15 straight points in the opening set before PHS broke serve to go on a 6-0 run.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Thursday in a Class 4A, Area 2 tri-match in Andalusia.
