A late comeback attempt fell short, and the the Pleasant Home Lady Eagles  lost to the Brantley Lady Bulldogs, 40-35, last night in the opening round of the eighth-annual Straughn High School Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lady Eagles got off to a 9-8 lead in the first period, but fouls and turnovers put them down 21-16  at halftime.

The Lady Eagles came out strong in the third period, pulling within three points of the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Eagles allowed too many second chance shots, and fell behind 30-21 at the end of the third.

The Lady Eagles had some big steals and fast-break scores late in fourth period, from Jade Self and Anna Bulger, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Bulldogs’ lead.

Cassidy Godwin led the Lady Eagles with 12 points. Self added 11 points, and River Baldwin had 8 points.

Payton Burnett led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 and Saquaya Lane had 6 points.

“We made mistakes tonight that we won’t make in the future, but we learned more from tonight’s game than we have any other game so far,” Lady Eagles head coach Jerry Davis said. “Our depth is a little depleted at the moment due to injuries, and a lot of the stuff we did wrong tonight is correctable. This was the first time this season we have had to face any adversity, but we get to play them three more times in the season, so we will see how it goes.”

The Lady Eagles play Houston Academy tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in Straughn.
