Yelder dressed up as Maya Angelou because she finds her interesting.

“I wanted to dress up as Maya Angelou because of the inspirational poems that she has written,” Yelder said. “As I was researching her, I found out that when she was little she had to go live with her grandmother. I found that interesting.”

Treadway went with Monroe County native and Pulitzer prize-winning author Harper Lee.

“I chose Harper Lee after I read her book,” Treadway said. “I wanted to know more about her, and I found out that her book was based on actual experiences. When I read it, I thought it was made up. I thought that was pretty cool.”

Living History is a project that the sixth grade students at AES participate in each school year. The students select famous people throughout history and learn about them in depth. Each student picks his or her own person, and on Friday the students will put their knowledge on display for the community.

On Friday, starting at 9:30, students in character will parade from City Hall to City Square, where they will stand ready to recite their speeches for observers until 10:15.

The public is invited to attend.
