The Red Level Tigers moved to 1-0 in Class 1A, Area 3 play as they held off the Brantley Bulldogs for a 58-57 victory on Monday afternoon in Red Level.

To start the first period, the Bulldogs came out strong and jumped on top 6-0.

Cale Mancill got the Tigers on the board with a jumper and moments later Jacob Catrett tied the contest up with a layup off of a steal.

Kade Green then put Red Level on top with a layup.

Chance Russell added three buckets in the period to help the Tigers take an 18-14 lead into the second.

Brantley started the second period 6-0 run to give them a 20-18 advantage.

The Tigers tied the game back up with a layup from Ontaryo Nearor.

Russell then came up with a steal and dished the rock to Mancill for layup to put Red Level up 22-20.

Green extended the Tigers’ lead with 3-pointer with under two minutes to play before halftime.

At halftime, Red Level was on top 31-25.

Red Level continued to pile on the pressure with a couple of big buckets from Nearor to start the third period.

A little later in the period, Green dialed in from 3-point land to give Red Level a 41-31 lead midway through the third period.

After Brantley tied the game with under a minute, Russell knocked down 1-of-2 free throws to give Red Level a 58-57 lead with 3 seconds left on the clock.

Without any time outs remaining, the Bulldogs perfectly executed a full-court pass that left a Brantley all alone with no one between him and the basket, but the layup attempt rattled out to give Red Level the win.

“I’m so proud of the way the boys played today,” Red Level head coach Allen Catrett said. “That is a big area win and we need all of those that we can get. We not have played great the whole game, but I was proud of the execution and effort at the end to finish.”

Nearor led the way for the Tigers with 20 points, nine assists and six blocks.

Mancill finished the game with 12 points.

Green and Russell each had 9 points in the Red Level victory.
