AES 6th graders collecting gifts for sick kids

Andalusia Elementary’s 6th grade Talented and Gifted (TAG) group is organizing a Christmas service project for children who have to spend the holidays in the hospital.

“We are going to fill stockings with gifts to help the time in the hospital be a bit merrier,” said TAG teacher Barbara Peek.

The project began because two students, Cape Merrell and Katie Kennedy, wanted to do something, Peek said.

“This is a 100% student driven project. I have made a few calls to coordinate with the hospitals and deal with the stocking purchase, but, mostly, I am just helping them organize,” Peek said. “The real work is going to come when we have to sort donations and stuff the stockings!”

The stockings are being donated by the Kappa Alphas at the University of South Alabama, which includes Andalusia natives Ian and Adam Peek and Colton and Ashton Elmore.

Students plan to visit children in Andalusia Hospital and USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile.

The students are seeking support filling the stockings, and specifically request gift cards, iTunes cards, toys and games appropriate for the hospital setting, or craft supplies.

The items may be dropped off at AES, or at the law office of John Peek, 28 South Court Square, Andalusia.
