Rainfall totals still down compared to last year

Only three inches of rain were recorded at Yellow River on Hwy. 55 for the entire month of August, according to data released from the Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority this week.
That was less than half the amount – 6.48 inches – recorded there in the same period last year. Year to date, 36.44 inches was recorded at that location through August, as compared to 48.52 inches in the same period last year.
Farther upstream, at the Yellow River on Hwy. 84,5.21 inches of rain was recorded in August, compared to 7.49 inches in August of last year.
Year to date, the Choc-Pea Authority has recorded 51.62 inches of rain there, compared to 58.58 last year.
September appears to be off to a more wet start.
In a 24-hour period from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 7 p.m. Wednesday, in which a system from Tropical Storm Gordan was dropping rain on South Alabama, the Choc-Pea system recorded 1.12 inches at Yellow River on Hwy. 55, while only .45 inches was recorded at Yellow River on Hwy. 84 in the same time period.
