Straughn Tigers take two from Red Level Tigers on hardwood

In a battle of Covington County’s two Tiger teams, Straughn’s boys and girls squads each came away with road wins over Red Level.

After falling behind to the host Red Level team, Straughn settled in and took home a 68-51 win over their county rival.

Red Level came out hot, jumping out to an 11-2 lead over Straughn early in the first period. The early first period lead came courtesy of four three-pointers, including two from Javen Poindexter. Justin Patterson and Junior Mayes also hit three pointers in the opening period.

After falling behind by nine points, Straughn started to get warmed up and managed to close the gap with Taylor Sikes hitting two three pointers while Clark Jordan hit two baskets, making the score 16-12 in favor of Red Level after one period.

Straughn made up the deficit and then some in the second period, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Layne Grantham led the second-period surge for Straughn, scoring 12 points while Kaden Williams was good for five, including a three pointer, and Parker Black added two baskets.

Red Level lost the lead, but stayed within striking distance with five points from Poindexter and buckets from Dominic Williams Jr., Patterson, and Koltin Barlow. At the end of the first half, the home Tigers were down 33-27.

Straughn increased its lead, outscoring Red Level by 10 points in the third period. Straughn hit two three-point shots, one by Kaden Wiggins and another from Joseph Driver as they extended their lead over Red Level, 50-34, going into the final period.

The two squads had similar point totals in the fourth, but Straughn was solid from the free-throw line, hitting seven of eight, to confirm the win, 68-51.

Leading scorers for Straughn (2-4) were Grantham with 27 and Wiggins with 22.

Red Level (3-2) was led by Poindexter who finished with 31 points.

The Lady Tigers from Straughn jumped out to an early lead over Red Level and never looked back enroute to a 52-24 win.

Led by Blakeley Smith, who had two three pointers in the first period, Straughn jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first period.

The two teams scored the same number of points in the second period as Straughn extended its lead to 21-12 at the half. Aubrey Pittman led Straughn in the period with six points while Red Level’s points came courtesy of two three-pointers, one by Mariah Crowell and another by Miracle Wright.

In the third, Alcee Radford hit two buckets for Straughn with Ora Hall, Bryleigh McBride and Smith each adding points. Kemariah Crittenden hit a three-pointer for Red Level with Amaya Williams also scoring.

Straughn added 10 more points to their lead in the fourth period, led by Marshall with four points. Crowell scored all seven of Red Level’s points down the stretch.

Leading scorers for Red Level (2-2) were Crowell with 13 and Crittenden with 5. Wright and Amaya Williams each finished with three points.

Leading the winning Tigers from Straughn (5-2) was Smith with 20 points. Hall, Pittman and Radford each finished the game with six points.

Straughn is scheduled to host Florala on Monday, Dec. 11. Red Level will travel to Opp on Monday, Dec. 11.
