Business expansions in Florala could soon mean new revenue for the city’s coffers.

Mayor Robert Williamson said two businesses requested support for liquor licenses at Monday’s meeting.

The first was from La Rumba Mexican restaurant, which is soon to be the city’s newest eatery.

“LaRumba’s still in the process of getting its official license from the ABC Board at this point,” Williamson said. “The second request was from Hari’s Grocery. They wanted to know if the city would approve them getting a liquor license.

“In Hari’s case, it’s already and established convenience store,” he said of the U.S. Hwy. 331 storefront. “He wants to do something inside his store without having to build a second facility, but the law requires it to be a separate contained area. That could mean a wall or even a cooler. He wanted to learn if the city was pro or con on his idea.”

Williamson said the city supported both requests.

“It’s always great when anyone can expand business,” he said. “And anytime there is a potential for that business owner to increase revenue, then that means increased revenue for the city – which we are always in support of.”

When asked about the demolition of the former Covington Industries building and the structures on the block, Williamson said he hasn’t been officially notified as to “what exactly is coming in there, but I’ve been told it will greatly benefit the city.”
