Red Level splits with McKenzie

The Red Level Tigers spilt varsity games with the McKenzie Tigers Thursday night in McKenzie with Red Level winning the boys’ game 56-39, but falling 36 -34 in the girls’ game.

GIRLS

MCKENZIE 36, RED LEVEL 34

 

The Red Level Lady Tigers battled hard, but a McKenzie layup with just a few seconds remaining in the game lifted the home team to 36-34 victory.

In the first period, Red Level got a strong start from Hannah Colvin, who knocked down a 3-pointer and a basket under the goal to help give Red Level a 7-6 lead at the end of the first.

Red Level had a little bit of trouble finding the basket in the second period, with Alexis Perdue and Olivia Whitfield getting two points each for Red Level.

At the end of the first half, Red Level trailed McKenzie 14-12.

The scoring came at a steadier pace in the third period for both teams, and heading into the final period McKenzie was on top 25-23.

Red Level got two points each from Perdue, Ashlyn Joyner and Amie Catrett. Jayla Poindexter had 4 points in the third period for Red Level.

Perdue and Poindexter each knocked down 3-pointers in the final period for Red Level, but it wasn’t enough to take out McKenzie.

In the varsity boys’ contest, Red Level jumped out front early and held on for a 56-39 victory.

Red Level opened up the game with a 9-5 lead. Ontaryo Nearor had 4 points in the opening period.

Javarius Grooms got rolling in the second period, as he accounted for 5 points to help give Red Level a 22-13 lead at halftime.

Red Level continued to increase its lead in the third period, as Nearor picked up 7 more points for the visiting Tigers.

Hunter Carpenter dialed in from long range in the fourth period to help lift Red Level to a 56-39 win.

“We played pretty good throughout the game,” Red Level head coach Allen Catrett said. “We’ve got to shoot the ball better and cut down on turnovers.”
