Aiming for the No. 2 seed

Red Level boys basketball coach Allen Catrett said he hopes his team will be the No. 2 seed leading into the Class 2A, Area 2 tournament, as the Tigers play host to New Brockton tonight in area action.

“I’d much rather be the second seed than the fourth seed,” Catrett said. “It’s a big game. As far as me looking at the standings, since we split with Samson, if we lose (tonight), then we’d be third with the way it looks.

“If New Brockton wins — if they beat us — then it’s tied between them and Elba for the No. 1 seed from the standings I see,” he said. “If we beat them, then Elba would be No. 1, and we’d face New Brockton in the first round of the (area) tournament.”

The last time Red Level faced New Brockton, the Tigers won in double overtime 75-71. Throughout that contest, the Tigers trailed the entire game until the fourth period.

Catrett said “following the game plan” and “finishing shots” are a must tonight.

Red Level is currently sitting at a 14-10 overall record, and is 4-3 in the area.

Catrett said the feedback he’s getting from his team is that they’re ready to play, despite a few players being sick.

“As far as I know everybody will be playing on Friday,” he said. “We hadn’t had everybody having practice together. As far as line ups, they’ll be about the same.”

Tip off for the Tigers tonight will be around 7:15 p.m.
