It takes a lot of power to lift a heavy set of weights.

Pleasant Home surged ahead of all its competitors, and won the Class 1A Alabama State High School Powerlifting Championship at Enterprise High School on Saturday.

PHS powerlifting coach Robert Bradford said the state championship was good for the team.

“I was extremely proud of our kids,” Bradford said. “They not only did the normal weight they do in weight rooms, but we had several kids lift weights they had never done before.

“That’s always encouraging to see that,” he said. “It’s also really important for the kids, too.”

Pleasant Home finished in second place in the Class 1A-6A power lifting tournament, where more than 15 high schools participated. The Eagles had 80 points; Enterprise finished in first place with 220 points; and Daleville was third with 47 points.

Pleasant Home’s Reggie Hamilton and John Caleb Sanders each finished in first place in their respective weight classifications; Evan Yates, Dustin Taylor, Austin Chesser and Andrew Brown each finished in second place; Jeffrey Slaughter finished in third place; Matthew Ballard and Michael O’Rourke each finished in fourth place; and David Baker and Cody Wiggins each finished in fifth place.

This was the second time Pleasant Home won the state championship. The Eagles’ last state title came in 2000.
