Several parents, teachers and school supporters in the Pleasant Home community have rallied together to organize a 5K run and walk set for Sat., May 21, at Harold’s Discount Furniture in Andalusia.

The 5K run/walk is called “Running for a Reason” because proceeds from the benefit will go to help Brian and Kerri Kelley, who have an infant son, Jacob, that was born April 1 with multiple birth defects.

“They’re having to make frequent trips to Birmingham,” Kelley Garner, one of the benefit’s organizers said. “We’re just hoping with this race to help alleviate some of the financial burden they are under right now.”

Those who are interested may pre-register before May 5. The pre-registration price is $15 per adult, and $10 for students.

After May 5, the registration costs will go up $5 for both adults and students.

“Anybody can walk or run in this,” Garner said.

Registration forms can be picked up at Harold’s, Piggly Wiggly and Southern Independent Bank in Andalusia. The forms can be filled out online at www.active.com, or mailed to Kelley Garner, 12672 Brookwood Road, Andalusia, AL 36420.

The race will start at 6 p.m., and the fun run for the kids will begin at 7 p.m.

Hamburger plates will be sold at the benefit as well. The plates are $5 each, and they come with a hamburger with all the trimmings, chips, dessert and a drink.

Garner said Jacob is at home right now after two surgeries, but will have to have another surgery in June.

“He’s facing a very expensive surgery in June,” she said. “We’re looking for anybody that runs or walks that wants to come out and support the cause. It’s going to be a fun night.”
