Straughn scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the eighth-ranked Lady Tigers held on late to beat Pleasant Home 3-0 Thursday on senior day at SHS.

Paige Caraway pitched a complete game allowing no runs on four hits. She struck out seven and had one walk.

SHS head softball coach Ray Wilson said the girls played well defensively, which is good at this time of the year.

“It was just another game where we just kept playing good defense, and kept getting out of jams,” Wilson said. “This time of the year when you’re going to play good teams like Pleasant Home, you want to be facing good teams this time of year so hopefully you’ll get better.”

In the sixth inning, SHS senior Katie Beck led with a single, and advanced to second base on a single by senior Kaitlynn Wiggins.

Beck and Wiggins later scored on a two-run single by Laken Harris.

SHS senior Tiffany Taylor then reached on an error that scored Harris to seal the Lady Tigers’ (33-9) win.

Pleasant Home’s Brentin Fuller allowed no hits in three innings and had three strikeouts. Kaitlin Brookshire pitched two innings, allowed two hits and struck out one.

Emily Byrd allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one for the loss.

“They played well, and did some things well and got the job the done,” PHS head softball coach Bradley Stephens said about Straughn. “They had that one inning where they just rallied and they hit it in the gap a few times.

“We got caught napping on defense and it cost us three runs,” he said.

Despite loss, Stephens said the play from the girls looked good.

“The first five innings, they’d hit the ball right at some one,” he said. “They (Straughn) did the same thing for us. We’d get a few on. but we just couldn’t produce a run.”

Straughn senior Katy Messick was 1-for-3 with a single; senior Tori Bracewell was 1-for-3 with a single; Wiggins was 1-for-3 with a single and one run; Harris was 1-for-3 with a single, one run and two RBIs; Caraway was 0-for-2 with a walk; Taylor was 0-for-3with an RBI; and Beck was 1-for-2 with a single and one run.

Pleasant Homes’ Ashley Copeland was 1-for-3 with a double; Byrd was 1-for-3 with a double; and Megan Cook was 2-for-3 with a single and a bunt single.

Straughn will play host to the Class 4A, Area 3 tournament next Tues., May 3. The first game begins at 10 a.m. between Straughn and Headland. Andalusia and Ashford will begin at 11:30 a.m. The area tournament will be played in a double elimination format.
