Pleasant Home handed Sweet Water its first loss of the season to earn a berth to play in its first sub-state round and finished in fourth place on Saturday at the Class 1A, Regional A tournament in Tuscaloosa.

This Lady Eagles ended Sweet Water’s perfect season, where they were sporting a 14-0 record going into the regional tournament, PHS coach Jerry Davis said.

“That’s a big deal for us this first time (going to sub-state),” PHS coach Jerry Davis said. “There are 16 teams left, and we’re one of them.”

Pleasant Home beat Sweet Water 3-1 (25-15, 28-26, 23-25, 25-14) to earn the sub-state berth, lost to Akron 3-2 (25-17, 16-25, 25-20, 25-12, 7-15) in what Davis called a “heart breaker” and fell to regional tournament host Holy Spirit 3-0 in the consolation game. Akron went on to beat area foe Kinston 3-0 in the finals to win the regional tournament.

With this fourth place finish, the Lady Eagles will travel Anniston to play Donoho on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a pretty good hike,” Davis said about the trip to play Donoho. “We’ll have to pull a major upset (to advance to the state tournament).”

Donoho (45-9) won the Regional B tournament with a 3-1 victory over Parkway Christian in the finals.

On the tournament overall, Davis said the girls played good on half and the other half they played tired.

“There’s going to be eight games on Thursday and we’re one of them,” he said. “You can’t get to state without playing that game. We’re still alive. I’m real proud of the girls.”
