Providing a good look

Pleasant Home volleyball coach Jerry Davis said today’s sub-state round match against top-ranked Donoho in Anniston will provide a good look at what great competition is all about.

“They’ve played some mighty good folks,” Davis said. “I think our girls will play hard, and I’m confident we’ll do what we need to do. There’s always a chance.”

Pleasant Home earned a berth in today’s Class 1A sub-state round with a first-match win over Sweet Water at the regional tournament, where the Lady Eagles finished in fourth place.

PHS (14-10) will play a Donoho team that is 45-9 this season.

“If you look at it that way, it’s going to be David versus Goliath,” Davis said about the match up. “David won that battle. It’ll depend on the momentum, and how it all starts out. If we get out, and play more than we normally do, then we’ll hold our own.”

One good thing about today’s match is that Donoho doesn’t know anything about the Lady Eagles, Davis said.

“There’s a factor of being over confident for them, and definitely there can be an upset,” he said.

Davis said at practice this week, he’s been stressing “front line play,” “blocking,” court “position” and “returning serves” as the big keys leading into today’s 5 p.m. match.

“We’ve won more than we have before,” he said. “Every thing’s good for us right now. I’ve told the girls that ‘you can’t get to that next game unless you win this one.'”
