Red Level almost wasn’t going to hold its spring football game because of the recent deaths in the school’s community, but the players thought the exact opposite.

“Losing those two young men — that was on a Sunday before starting (spring football) on the Monday — I had it in my mind to cancel the whole thing,” RLS head football coach Tony Ingram said. “I was talking to the kids, and they wanted to do it so much for Levi (Neal) and Evan (Carpenter).”

This Friday night, the Tigers will travel to play McKenzie in their spring football game, where both junior varsity and varsity teams will have time playing again under pad and helmet.

Game time is slated for 6 p.m. The junior varsity squads will play the first and third quarters, while the varsity squads will play the second and fourth quarters.

The normal game time of 12-minute quarters will be applied. Admission to the game is $5 per person.

Ingram said spring practice has been “spotty” this year because the team hasn’t had consistent days of practice.

“Practice was spotty,” he said. “We got two days in last week. We’ve had a spring sports banquet Monday night, and an academic banquet Tuesday.

“I know we’re not ready to play,” he said. “I told the guys if we go up, and give a good effort then I’ll be satisfied considering what they’ve been through this spring.”
